LARA COMMUNITY UPDATE | 21 OCTOBER 2026

Major changes are underway at one of Lara’s busiest intersections. Here’s what local residents, commuters and businesses need to know about the latest Six Ways upgrade works.

If you’ve travelled through the centre of Lara recently, you’ve probably noticed construction activity around the Six Ways intersection.

The Victorian Government’s $16 million Lara Six Ways Intersection Upgrade is now underway, with works planned to improve road safety, pedestrian access and traffic flow through the township.

With a new stage of construction beginning on 20 October 2026, we’ve put together a local update covering the upcoming roadworks, temporary closures and what the completed intersection is expected to look like.

What’s happening at Lara Six Ways in October 2026?

According to Transport Victoria, temporary safety barriers were scheduled to be installed around the intersection on the night of Monday 19 October, with further works at Kees Road and Patullos Road beginning on Tuesday 20 October.

Construction is continuing around Station Lake Road, with traffic management and reduced speed limits in place to help maintain vehicle movement while work progresses.

Works scheduled through to early December 2026 include:

  • Widening sections of road pavement
  • Drainage upgrades and temporary road surfaces
  • Construction of a new bus stop on the northern side of Station Lake Road
  • Changes to service-road entry and exit points to support staged construction

These works form part of the wider project to replace the existing roundabout with a signalised intersection.

Road closures, detours and traffic delays

One of the biggest changes for local motorists is the temporary disruption around Kees Road.

Kees Road closure information

Period: From 20 October until early December 2026.

Closure: Kees Road will be closed intermittently in both directions at its intersection with Patullos Road.

Detour: Via Benjamin Drive.

Expected delays: Up to five minutes for the announced works.

Drivers should also be aware of temporary changes to parking and pedestrian access. The car park north of the intersection, between Kees Road and Forest Road North, will have reduced access and may close at times.

The pedestrian crossing connecting this car park to nearby shops will also be affected. Residents are encouraged to follow temporary signage for alternative access.

The full Six Ways intersection was scheduled to close overnight from 8pm on 19 October until 6am on 20 October for barrier installation. That planned overnight closure has now passed, but further temporary traffic restrictions may occur as construction continues.

What does this mean for local residents and businesses?

Six Ways connects several important parts of Lara, with traffic moving between local shopping areas, residential neighbourhoods, schools and the railway station.

While construction is underway, Transport Victoria has advised that residents may experience:

  • Temporary reduced speed limits and lane closures
  • Changed vehicle and pedestrian access
  • Temporary closures of some nearby bus stops
  • Construction noise and occasional overnight lighting

Most scheduled construction activity will take place between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, with some Saturday and overnight works also required.

Transport Victoria has stated that access to local properties and businesses will be maintained during construction, although routes and parking arrangements may temporarily change.

What will the completed Six Ways intersection look like?

The project will significantly change the existing road layout, replacing the current single-lane roundabout with traffic lights and additional vehicle lanes.

Planned improvements include:

  • New traffic lights replacing the existing roundabout
  • Signalised pedestrian crossings at the main intersection
  • Additional pedestrian crossings on Flinders Avenue and Kees Road
  • Extra traffic lanes to improve capacity and traffic movement
  • Changes to right-turn movements at Kees Road and Flinders Avenue
  • Relocation of the Pioneers’ Memorial Cairn and public toilet block

Changes to right turns

Once the new layout is in place, drivers will no longer be able to turn right from Kees Road onto Patullos Road.

Right turns between Flinders Avenue and Station Lake Road will also be removed in both directions. Alternative turning arrangements will be available via nearby roads and the new traffic lights.

These permanent changes are intended to reduce risky turning movements and improve traffic flow through the intersection.

When will the Lara Six Ways upgrade be completed?

Major construction commenced in September 2026, with the overall project currently targeting completion in mid-2027.

As with any major infrastructure project, this timeline may change depending on weather, construction progress and other site conditions.

For those who travel through the intersection regularly, it is worth keeping an eye on official construction notices as different stages of the project are completed.

Keeping our Lara community informed

For those of us who live, work and spend time in Lara, improvements to local roads and community facilities are an important part of the township’s ongoing development.

While the construction period will require some patience, the project is intended to make the intersection safer and improve access between the places locals use every day.

At Lara Real Estate, our connection to the local community goes beyond property. From infrastructure projects and new developments to community events and local news, we believe it’s important to keep residents informed about what’s happening in Lara.
